The most common question we get is: “When is the best time to trek in Nepal?” The short answer: autumn (Oct–Nov) and spring (Mar–Apr) are usually best. But other months can also work, depending on the region and the experience you want.
Main Trekking Seasons in Nepal
Autumn (October–November)
- Why it’s great: Clear skies after the monsoon, stable weather, excellent mountain views.
- Good for: Classic treks like Everest Base Camp, Annapurna region, and popular short hikes near Kathmandu.
- Things to know: It’s the busiest season, so book flights and lodges early.
Spring (March–April)
- Why it’s great: Warmer temperatures, blooming rhododendron forests, longer days.
- Good for: Treks that pass through forests and hills, such as Shivapuri, Champadevi, and mid-altitude routes.
- Things to know: Afternoon clouds are more common; mornings are usually clearer.
Winter (December–February)
- Why it can be good: Quieter trails, crisp air and clear skies at lower altitudes.
- Good for: Short hikes around Kathmandu and Pokhara, and lower-altitude treks without very high passes.
- Things to know: It can be extremely cold at high altitude, and some passes may be closed due to snow.
Monsoon (June–September)
- Challenges: Rain, clouds, leeches on low trails, possible flight delays.
- Still possible: Regions in the rain shadow, like Upper Mustang and parts of Dolpo, can be good options.
So When Should You Come?
- For first-time trekkers: Choose autumn or spring for the most reliable conditions.
- For quiet trails: Late November, early December, or late February can be good “shoulder” times.
- For short hikes near Kathmandu: You can hike year-round with proper clothing, especially on routes like Nagarkot–Dhulikhel and Phulchowki.
